More weakness ?

More weakness On Friday morning, the short term scenario is not optimistic. Overnight, American markets have fallen, with the Dow at a six year low. if the Nifty were to touch a six year low, then we would be at 920. Since we are currently trading at 2790, let us be thankful for small mercies.

A narrow, tight trading range for the Nifty is between 2760 and 2850. A dip to 2760 does not justify selling since there is some possibility of support re-emerging. While market may eventually fall, short selling is likely to become difficult, with support coming in at lower levels, every time the Nifty declines. This is what I meant on CNBC yesterday (thursday).

A dip in the Nifty to 2760, is not automatically a sell. If the market consolidates, then the there is a possible long trade with stops below the consolidation. Now, will the market oblige us by not falling further ? This is unknown.

SCOOP: Mahindra Scorpio Facelift Revealed!

SCOOP: Mahindra Scorpio Facelift Revealed! 2009 Facelifted Mahindra Scorpio

You saw it first on cubiccapacity

Mahindra & Mahindra will launch the facelifted 2009 Scorpio very soon in the Indian market. We can reveal all the details much before the launch thanks to our reader Parminder who has sent us these pictures all the way from Dubai where the ad. was being shot for the latest Mahindra baby.

The front bumper is now more muscular and aggressive and hold a pair of smartly designed larger fog lamps. The front grille is now bigger with a chromed central tooth, a new Mahindra design element which started with the Bolero facelift, Xylo and now to the Scorpio. The air dam contrasts with the colored front bumper complete with mesh thrown in for good measure. The projector type headlights have a slightly different profile and come with integrated LED blinkers. The rear view mirrors are completely redesigned and can now be adjusted electrically (thank you Mahindra!)

The side profile is unchanged except for the new body cladding with smoother surface and ‘Scorpio’ embossed on the cladding on the rear door, a bit over the top frankly. The changes to rear are also minimal with a slightly redesigned bumper with integrated footstep. The interiors are largely the same with some functional changes like a dashboard integrated stero and a new gear lever. Overall the new Scorpio certainly looks more upmarket and the build quality also seems to have improved.

The new Scorpio will be available with the 2.2 Litre mHawk engine only. The 2.6 Litre engine is being discontinued.

Delhi 6 Movie review sify rating

Delhi 6 Movie review sify rating Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra thinks out of the box and it's more than evident now. First Aks, then Rang de Basanti, now Delhi-6. A two-liner of the story may give you an impression that it's similar to UTV's earlier outing Swades, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker: An American of Indian origin returns to his roots and decides to stay back in India. But Delhi-6 bites more than it can chew.
Preview, images and videos: All about Delhi-6 | Sonam Kapoor, the Masakali girl | Check out our special on Abhishek Bachchan

Set in old Delhi, the screenplay [Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Prasoon Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey] takes its own sweet time to come to the point. In fact, the entire first half is dedicated to the sundry characters in the bylanes of old Delhi, where several stories run parallel with the main plot.

The two warring brothers [Om Puri, Pawan Malhotra] and the wall that divides the two; the daughter of the house [Sonam Kapoor] aspires to be an 'Indian Idol' contestant; a moneylender's [Prem Chopra] wife has an illicit relationship with one of his lecherous debtors [Cyrus Sahukar]; an 'untouchable' [Divya Dutta] makes more sense than the so-called thekedaars of samaj; a friend of the family [Rishi Kapoor] has still not forgotten his first love [Tanvi Azmi].

Oh yes, there's also a 'Kaala Bandar' who spreads havoc in the locality. Really, Rakeysh tries to pack in multiple stories in those 2.18 hours.

But, alas, the problem is that barring a few individualistic sequences, you don't carry the film home. The film is engaging in bits and spurts. Worse, it tends to get monotonous, preachy and boring and the end is so bizarre, you actually want to ask the writers, 'Hey guys, you okay?'

Let's cut a long story short: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra misses the bus this time.

Delhi-6 tells the story of a young American boy Roshan [Abhishek Bachchan] of Indian origin, who comes to India for the first time, to drop his ailing grandmother [Waheeda Rehman]. She wants to retire and spend the last leg of her life back home; dissolving into the soil she was born in.

In America, having led a very western lifestyle, Roshan is not familiar with the sites and smells, the food and culture, the religion and beliefs, this huge melting pot that India is. He believes that Dadi had left her family and loved ones back in America, only to realise that how wrong he was.

The warmth and affection of the neighbourhood embraces him with open arms. Amidst all this he meets the beautiful Bittu [Sonam Kapoor], who wants to break free from the typical Indian social structure. Roshan is destined to lose his heart to her.

That Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is an accomplished storyteller is evident in several individualistic scenes. Note the scene when Vijay Raaz slaps Abhishek and Abhishek slaps him back. Also, portions in the second hour, when a Baba [Akhilendra Mishra] triggers off the Mandir-Masjid talk and divides the two communities, is very well structured. The sequences are disturbing and the writers and director succeed in exposing the fickle-minded people residing in the locality.

But the screenplay isn't foolproof. The romantic track is the weakest link in the enterprise. The love story falls flat. Also, the ending is so abstract that an average moviegoer would find it difficult to comprehend what the actual culmination is. The sequence in the end, when Amitabh and Abhishek have a conversation, looks weird. In fact, ridiculous. What was the need to have this sequence? It makes no sense. Even the Ram Leela sequences, interspersed at regular intervals, are forced in the screenplay.

Rakeysh's handling of the subject is exemplary at places. But the writing [faulty at times] as also the execution of the material isn't the type that would appeal to all sections of moviegoers.

A.R. Rahman's music is outstanding; it's easily amongst his finest works. 'Masakali', 'Ye Dilli Hai Mere Yaar', 'Rehna Tu', 'Maula' and 'Genda Phool' are amazing tracks. Ditto for Prasoon Joshi's lyrics; they're gems. Binod Pradhan's cinematography is brilliant. Watch the Jama Masjid sequence [breath-taking] or the camera movements in the bylanes of old Delhi. Just one word to describe the output: Incredible!

Abhishek doesn't work. His American accent sounds fake. Sonam is likeable. Waheeda Rahman enacts her part well. Rishi Kapoor is wasted. He deserved a better role. Amongst supporting actors, Om Puri [powerful], Pawan Malhotra [flawless], Vijay Raaz [tremendous], Deepak Dobriyal [genuine], Divya Dutta [admirable] and Cyrus Sahukar [likable] leave a mark.

Prem Chopra is alright. Atul Kulkarni looks like a buffoon. And what is Raghvir Yadav doing in this film? Supriya Pathak, Tanvi Azmi, K.K. Raina, Akhilendra Mishra and Dayashanker Pandey are passable. Amitabh Bachchan's presence in the penultimate minutes fails to evoke any reaction.

On the whole, Delhi-6 has a terribly boring beginning [first hour], an absorbing middle [second half] and a weak end [climax]. At the box-office, the business is bound to be divided. The film may record bountiful collections at multiplexes in its opening weekend. The popular music as also the fact that there's no major opposition will benefit the film in the initial days. But the business at single screens as also the mass belt will be a shocking contrast. However, the cracks will start appearing sooner than expected, even at plexes. Thumbs down!

UGC Draft Notification : Unhappy teachers went for strike.

UGC Draft Notification : Unhappy teachers went for strike.
On the call given by Federation of central university teachers' association (FEDCUTA), the two-day strike by teachers of Allahabad University and its constituent colleges started on Thursday. Though teachers abstained from classes, the practical examinations which are presently underway were held as per the schedule.

The call for the two-day strike was given in view of the draft regulation of University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the new pay scale of Central university teachers. As per the UGC proposals, the promotions will henceforth be based on the points which will be accrued by a teacher on the basis of published papers, books, participation in seminars and other similar academic activities.

Besides, the main point of contention is the requirement of existing readers facing another selection committee for being promoted to associate professorship. This is in contradiction with the official communique issued by the human resource development ministry which mentioned that all existing readers be placed in the new scale of associated professor without facing any selection committee, explained Dr SI Rizvi, reader in department of biochemistry, AU.

Meanwhile, the teachers of AU and its constituent colleges stayed away from teaching on Thursday. The members of AUCCTA held a meeting at the Sanskrit department and criticised the UGC for tempering with the notification of HRD ministry, dated December 31, 2008. The meeting also appealed to the AU vice-chancellor to initiate positive action on the long pending issues pertaining to teachers of not only AU but also of the constituent colleges.

Similarly, the members of the Allahabad University Teachers Association discussed the draft UGC notification of revision of pay scales, minimum qualifications for appointment of teachers in universities and colleges. They expressed deep anguish over the anomalies in the draft notification. But, the standing committee of AUTA said that in view of the approaching examinations students should not be made to suffer.

Some teachers of the science faculty, however, continued with their work and supervised practical examinations in the labs.

U.S. Consumer Inflation Rises 0.3 Percent in January

U.S. Consumer Inflation Rises 0.3 Percent in January Following five months of consecutive declines, consumer inflation climbed in January at the same time annual inflation stood flat for the first time since 1955, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Consumer prices in January rose 0.3 percent. The increase is due mostly to higher energy costs, which jumped 1.7 percent and were led by a 6 percent increase in gasoline prices. On a 12-month basis, however, energy prices were down 20.4 percent. And that held the annual inflation rate to 0 percent.

Excluding food and fuel, the core rate increased by 0.2 percent last month and by 1.7 percent in the past year.

The Inflation Calculator and rate charts on CoinNews have been updated with the government’s latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. By entering any two dates from 1913-2009 and then a dollar amount, the calculator measures the change in the buying power of the dollar over time.
Inflation Calculator examples

Using the calculator, anyone can determine the purchasing power of the dollar over time. A few examples after adjusting for inflation:

* An item purchased in 1913 for $1 would now cost $21.23 (down 42 cents from 2008)
* An item purchased in 1950 for $10 would now cost $87.61 (down $1.73 from 2008)
* An item purchased for $20 in 1985 would now cost $39.25 (down 77 cents from 2008)

Mixed dates may also be used with the Inflation Calculator. As examples:

* An item purchased today for $500 would have cost $127.40 in 1975
* An item purchased for $1000 in 1980 would have cost $1,586.17 in 1990

Of course, not all "goods and services" rise or fall in tandem with inflation rates. For example, many computers when adjusted for inflation are actually less expensive today (and do much more) compared to years ago.
Latest Charts on Inflation Rates

The CoinNews inflation page also includes two updated charts indicating the:

* Annual Averages for Rate of Inflation
* Annual Percent Changes for Rate of Inflation or Inflation Rates

While the Inflation Calculator is more of a general financial interest tool, specific numismatic calculators and tools may be found via the CoinNews menu: "COIN PRICING & COLLECTOR TOOLS".

Ramesh Responds

Ramesh Responds Mr. Ponnuru has another post up about the recent unpleasantness:

Palin Mailbag [Ramesh Ponnuru]

A reader:

I appreciate that you're taking a wait-and-see approach on the presidential candidates for 2012—we should probably all do that. I just wish you conservative elite types—and I don't mean that in an insulting way—would defend Palin when she is viciously attacked, as she has been again and again. Instead you took a swipe at her for not being able to write her own speeches.

Defend Palin when she is unfairly criticized? You mean, like here and here and here and here and here and here and here? I'll get right on it. As for my alleged "swipe," check the context. I was commenting on two lines in a Washington Post article on Palin that I found amusing—one by her in an endorsement letter, one by one of her critics. I noted that her line was better but said, in fairness to the other guy, that she may not have written it herself. I don't think it would be wise for most politicians to write their own speeches or op-eds, and would never criticize Palin for that reason.

Well said.

As I noted yesterday, I'm a fan of Mr. Ponnuru. His book "The Party of Death" is perhaps this generation's finest philosophical treatise on the life issues. It has an honored place on my bookshelf. His work is always thoughtful. That's why it was so discouraging to see what many of us interpreted as a snark against Palin.

Perhaps we've become over-sensitized because we're on the defensive from all sides. I think we might have engaged in friendly fire with Mr. Ponnuru, and for that we're sorry. We never want to alienate an ally.

We've already tried to make amends a little.

UPDATE by VO: I sent an apology to Mr. Ponnuru for my "jerk" remark, an apology which he graciously accepted. He was also gracious enough to say that he understood how his remark might have been misinterpreted, and that our conversation with Mr. Taylor did make some good points. Thanks, Mr. Ponnuru, and best wishes!

This Post Brought to You By the Green Movement
This is Bakouma Kpatekatola, a young man from the West African nation of Togo. In 2003, when Bakouma was 9 years old, my family became his sponsor through the Childreach-Plan USA organization. In the years since we became occasional pen pals; a few times a year we'd get a letter from him, in his native French, along with an English translation from his caseworker. Sometimes he spoke of coming to America. At Christmas the letters would contain a photo, which we ritually magnetted up on the fridge to chronicle his growth. We reciprocated with our family pictures. I sometimes wondered if he wondered about us like we wondered about him. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't really notice when we didn't receive his annual Christmas letter last year. Yesterday we received a letter from his caseworker explaining why: Bakouma died in December of malaria. He was 14 years old.

Bakouma was one of approximately one million people who died of malaria last year. Almost all of them were like him: poor, young, and African. And almost all of those deaths could have been prevented through vaccines, insecticide-treated netting, and (gasp) DDT spraying. Empirical research supports the indoor residual spraying (IRS) of DDT as not only safe, but the most economical and effective method for malaria prevention. For example, a 1996 DDT ban in South Africa, pushed by environmental groups, led to a malaria epidemic with over 60,000 cases reported in 2000. After DDT spraying resumed in 2001, infections dropped 80% in one year. Facing a mounting death toll across Africa the World Heath Organization and USAID have recently lent support to IRS using DDT, but its adoption continues to be opposed by environmental extremists relying on shoddy science and fearmongering.

Togo, incidentally, is one of the countries where IRS/DDT is not yet implemented. Would it have saved Bakouma Kpatekatola? Maybe, possibly, probably. The grim calculus involved in that what-if is, at this point, strictly academic. But it's not too late to tip the odds in favor of the millions of other kids in Africa at risk. In memory of Bakouma, please join me in supporting Africa Fighting Malaria which advocates the use of all tools for malaria eradication, including DDT. Sponsor a kid through Childreach-Plan USA. Write your congressmen and President Obama and encourage them to continue the USAID policy of support for IRS/DDT. Finally, if you're so inclined, please remember Bakouma tonight in your prayers. Thanks.

How To Make A Banana Smoothie

How To Make A Banana Smoothie There's really not much to a banana smoothie. I don't know how stores can stay in business doing nothing but throwing fruit and milk in a blender and charging four bucks each for it.

Oh, wait ... I think that four bucks each might be the secret. Okay, so what I don't get is why would anyone pay four bucks for one of these.
Ingredients

banana
milk
yogurt

Directions

Peel the banana. Yeah, I know you knew that, but I'm being complete here, okay? Break it in half and drop it in the cup you want to use.

Fill the cup with milk up to about a half-inch from the top. This is the best way to measure, since every banana is a slightly different size.

Hold the banana in place while you pour the milk into your blender. Otherwise it will splash. Then carefully add the banana.

Add a couple spoonfuls of yogurt.

This was really supposed to be plain yogurt, but they were actually out of plain when my wife went to the store. This lowfat vanilla was the plainest she could find. And I'm not going to pay four times as much at the health food store. Okay, that's my rant for the day.

Blend on high speed until the banana is completely pulverized and everything is foamy on top.

Pour it back into your cup.

And that's it.

Just a couple more days until my free online mini-course starts. And I've come up with a name for it.

How To Cook Like Your Grandmother: Starting From Scratch

Registration officially opens on the 23rd, but if you drop me an email now at basic-course@cooklikeyourgrandmother.com with "Register me for the free mini-course" in the subject line, and your name in the email, I'll be sure to reserve a slot for you!

Sygic Demos Turn-by-Turn GPS iPhone App with Voice Navigation

Sygic Demos Turn-by-Turn GPS iPhone App with Voice Navigation A turn-by-turn voice navigation app is one of the most wanted app for iPhone 3G. xWaves had recently announced that they will be releasing an updated version of their xGPS for the jailbroken iPhone which will bring turn-by-turn voice navigation for the first time to the iPhone.

At the Mobile World Congress 2009, Sygic, a developer of navigation software for smartphones and PDAs demoed an iPhone version of their navigation software that includes turn-by-turn GPS directions with voice prompts, points of interest, support for multiple countries and locally-stored maps.

Folks at iPhone blog who had a chance to see the iPhone app in action at the TeleAtlas booth at Mobile World Congress 2009 have reported that the iPhone app includes turn-by-turn GPS directions with voice prompts, points of interest, support for multiple countries and locally-stored maps.

Sygic's iPhone app uses TeleAtlas maps which are stored locally on the iPhone. So the advantage is that it does not need a data connection for it to work but maps would take up quite a bit of space on your iPhone. For eg. maps of Europe will take up 2 GB of space.

You can see some of the screenshots of the iPhone app below (courtesy folks at The iPhone Blog):
Sygic - True GPS iPhone App

Sygic - True GPS iPhone App

Sygic - True GPS iPhone App

Sygic - True GPS iPhone App Sygic - True GPS iPhone App

You can also watch the video of Sygic app running on a Nokia E90 to get an idea of how it works:

It will be interesting to see if Apple approves Sygic's app as iPhone's SDK prohibits "real time route guidance". But if it gets approved then it will easily be one of the killer iPhone apps as it will turn your iPhone into a true GPS device.

What do you think about Sygic's iPhone GPS app? What price will you be willing to pay for it?

home depot center seating chart Shnoodle & Sweet Connie's Economic Stimulus Road Trip!

home depot center seating chart Last November, Connie told me that Christopher Moore was going to be doing a book signing at Powell's in February, and did I want to go? Did I!? At the time I said we should make a stop at Fabric Depot too, since it was in the area. And that was the humble beginning of Shnoodle & Sweet Connie's Economic Stimulus Road Trip! (Disclaimer: all photos were taken while I was showing Patrick my purchases, so yeah, that's his lap/arms under the pillow!)

Our first stop was Quilter's Junction in Centralia. Even though their shop is small, they make good use of their space. There were bolts of fabric stuffed in an antique sink, fat quarters and buttons peeking out of the open drawers of antique furniture, and a really nice selection that ranged from Civil War prints to my own Dear Jane colors!

From there we headed to Evie's Yarn Emporium in Longview. They were in the middle of moving their store to a larger spot across the street...while we were there. I question the wisdom of staying open while attempting this move, it was a little off-putting from the customer standpoint. I have no doubt it will be a lovely yarn shop when they are done with it - lots of comfy seating in the back to sit and stitch - but we left pretty quickly.

From there it was on to Powell's itself. We had discovered that the book signing was actually at the store in Beaverton later that night, but who can go to Portland without a stop at the City of Books? After a comical parking mini-adventure (a sub-adventure, if you will), we had some lunch in the Coffee Room and went to town!

We both naturally gravitated to the crafts section, then spent at least an hour dominating the aisle. Well, quilting and knitting were on opposite sides of the same aisle - what would you expect? Ever since Calamity Kim made this post, I have been toying with the idea of lace (I know, I need another hobby like I need a hole in the head). I picked up the Cathedral Windows book for a similar reason - Quilting Fiesta posted a two-part tutorial on her blog, and I thought, "hmm, that's something I don't know how to do yet..."

The rest of these were just books I'd been looking forward to reading at reasonable prices. I am a huge Douglas Coupland fan, from his early Shampoo Planet days, so the Gum Thief is just one more in my collection. Patrick and I both really liked Jasper Fforde's Nursery Crimes books, so I picked up the three Thursday Next books. The Wonder Woman notecards jumped into my basket and begged to come home with me. Nothing could be done about it!

I had done a pretty sick amount of research before heading out on this epic shopping adventure, and found the Yarn Garden on the other side of the river. It's huge, they have a gorgeous selection, and they are just about the nicest people we met. Connie is working on that massive Ravelry hit, the Sylvi sweater, so she had a nice chat with a shopkeeper who was also working on it. As a new knitter I tend to follow Connie around in yarn stores, touching particularly soft yarn when asked to, and generally being overwhelmed by the amount of choices available. But the above skeins caught my eye and I needed to find a pattern to go with it. This cute little bag pattern should be really pretty in these yarns.

After Yarn Garden we worked our way north to Fabric Depot. It's a little bit of a slog, but it was worth it! I haven't been doing much stash-building these days, so I try and stick to purchasing for a project. The dark red at the bottom is a flannel I'm going to use for the backing of the February quilt. The green batik is for an upcoming Bonnie Hunter class I'm taking (yeah!), and the rest of it is all quarter yard cuts for my Dear Jane. Except those 3 yards of beautiful script...I have a secret plan for those. Also, I picked up some silk threads from YLI to see what all the fuss was about. I'll use them for applique in the DJ.

Christopher Moore is a very funny guy, which is nice because he lives up to his written self. He entertained the audience for a good 20 minutes, answered questions, and gave out some hats. I'm excited to read this, but I'm trying to finish the book I'm on first (Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer).

michelle and jim bob duggar

michelle and jim bob duggar Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar of Springdale, Arkansas, are the parents of 18 children, and their family is the focus of a TLC network reality series.
Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar say they are grateful for their 18 children, and may have more.

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar say they are grateful for their 18 children, and may have more.

Joy Behar, guest host Thursday night on "Larry King Live," asked the Duggars how they are able to stay debt free with such a large family and what they thought of Nadya Suleman, the single mother who recently gave birth to octuplets after having fertility treatments.

Following is a transcript of their conversation.

Joy Behar: Let me ask you something. What is your reaction to this octomom? Nadya Suleman, the story. What do you think about that?

Michelle Duggar: Well, I just know from my own heart, I can't judge and look at her and judge her situation. I just know from my heart, and personally God changed our heart about children years ago. And so we've kind of gone about it the old-fashioned way. And so we are enjoying each one of the blessings that God has given us, and we're thankful for each one of them.

Behar: Right, at least you guys enjoyed having the babies, you went through the sex then the giving birth. This woman didn't have any of that, except the giving birth, which must have been rough, don't you think?

Michelle Duggar: Oh, my, I can't imagine. I had twins, but I have -- I just can't imagine having eight at once and the responsibility that that brings.
Don't Miss

* People.com: Octuplet mom's home in default

Behar: Why do you suppose this woman has provoked such negativity? They have a "USA Today" Gallup poll saying 70 percent of those surveyed are unsympathetic to this woman. What is going on?

Michelle Duggar: Well, you know, I feel like probably more than anything it's just the fact of the responsibility issues from their perspective, and I, you know, I imagine that's probably more of the animosity that's out there. And so -- but I do -- I just can't imagine, you know, her -- how she's going to handle that many little ones under the age of 8. That's a lot of little ones all at once.

Jim Bob Duggar: We just need to pray for her.

Behar: But you guys haven't experienced that kind of hostility for the children you have. Is that because you're married?

Michelle Duggar: I don't know. I think maybe, you know, being that God's given ours one or two at a time and we've kind of done it the old-fashioned way, I don't know. We love them, we're enjoying them, and by God's grace we're taking care of them if he gives us one more. So I just think we're grateful.

Behar: I understand that you guys are debt free. I can't even imagine how you pulled that off. ... How did you do that?

Jim Bob Duggar: Well, back about 18 years ago, we saw Jim Sammons' financial seminar on DVD, and it was life-changing. At that point, we purposed to try to get out of debt and try to stay out of debt. And our family motto is to buy used and save the difference. We shop a lot at garage sales, thrift stores.

Michelle Duggar: Auctions. We bought our industrial kitchen equipment that way, our vehicles that way, and so we really cut corners and we live very frugally.

Jim Bob Duggar: That's right, we've never bought a new vehicle. So we do live -- we try to -- we know how to stretch a dollar.

Behar: How many cars do you have?

Jim Bob Duggar: We actually have probably about, what? Seven or eight right now?

Michelle Duggar: We have a lot of drivers, which is great.

Behar: Seven or eight cars, well, that's an expensive proposition, isn't it? Do you get public assistance of any kind?

Jim Bob Duggar: No, we don't -- we've never had any public assistance. Just like our 21-passenger bus, we bought at a sealed-bid auction for $2,100, we bought an '04 Suburban at an auction for like $7,000. Instead of $40,000 on a vehicle we ...

Behar: Yeah, I got it. I see what you're doing. But you have a book deal and a TV show. That's got to help. Do you think the octomom could get a TV show like you have? That might help her a lot.

Michelle Duggar: I could not imagine having that many little ones and being busy with a show. I think for our situation, our children are a lot older and our heart is really to just share with other families, encourage them that children are a gift and enjoy them while you have them because they grow up really fast. And so ...

Behar: Well, you keep having more. But you have plenty to still enjoy. They keep coming. I don't see that you're ever going to have an empty nest syndrome. They're going to be there.

Michelle Duggar: I hope not.

Behar: You guys will never be alone.

Michelle Duggar: We look forward to grandbabies, then. That'll be fun.

Behar: You know, let me ask you one more question about her. If she did get involved in doing a reality show like you guys are doing, do you have any advice for her? What kind of show should she have? Maybe she needs a baseball team or something. What advice could you give her?

Michelle Duggar: I don't -- I really -- I don't know.

Jim Bob Duggar: Yeah, I think it's a full-time job just taking care of the children while they're young. Maybe 10 years from now when the kids are 10 years old, that might be an option. But when they're all small, I think there's a lot of needs. And so, I think, she'll have her hands full. As I know when we had seven that were 7 and under, it was a very busy time.

Behar: Are you going to have some more, Michelle?

Jim Bob Duggar: I've always left it up to Michelle.

Michelle Duggar: We'll see. We'll take it one at a time. I would love more, but we'll see if the Lord sees fit and blesses us with another one.

Behar: Do you ever say to Jim Bob, get away from me, I have a headache?

Jim Bob Duggar: Actually, I can't keep her away from me.

Behar: Oh, boy. You guys are funny. OK, thanks so much for sharing your time with us yet again. Good luck to you both.

stand down house Making a Difference; ROY FOSTER

stand down house Fifty-three year old Floridian Roy Foster is a worthy addition to CNN Heroes. He is a man I can relate to...like Foster, I am a veteran, I served during the same period he did, and like Foster I too found myself abusing substances. In my case I looked into the abyss and held on, and ran away from it. Foster fell into the pit, but pulled himself out, and is now serving as a saviour and guiding light to veterans have fallen through the cracks.

Foster, who was once homeless, spent most of the 1980's on the street. Once sober in the 1990's he committed himself to help those who found themselves in situations like the one he endured. With fellow veteran Don Reed, Foster established the non- profit Faith*Hope*Love*Charity. FHLC created Stand Down House, where 45 veterans can be temporarily housed during various stages of recovery. With funding from the Veterans Administration, Stand Down House requires that its residents seek work or attend school in return for receiving medical and/or psychiatric care, meals, and a roof over their heads.

Embedded video from CNN Video

It has been estimated that one out of every three homeless in America are US service veterans, and on any given night, a shocking 150,000 veterans are left to fend for themselves, without shelter or sustenance, according to a statement from the VA. In 2008 93% of the residents of Stand Down House found work, and 84% now live self sufficient lives.

Roy Foster, formerly a drug addicted homeless man, has found his life's work.

In Roy's own words he'll tell you why he does what he does..."Its my calling".

nyu protest NYU Protest Update: The Final Four

nyu protest There are only a few students left inside the Kimmel Center, which has been occupied since Thursday in the Take Back NYU protest. Those are the final four in the picture, reported by NYU Local's twitter feed to be Ryan Olander -- an intern at the Washington Peace Center who is not an NYU student but "joined the occupation because he agrees with the protesters' political ideas and purpose," reports the Washington Square News -- Drew Phillips, whom NYU Local identifies as an NYU philosophy major, Sarah Magno (NYU) and Krista Hendricksen (Drew University) .

evictednon.jpg

Students (above) from other schools, including the New School (site of a similar protest in December), were given a clear path to leave Kimmel before the final showdown and staged an impromptu press conference in support of Take Back NYU. The school said that any non-NYU students found inside -- or any NYU student refusing to identify him or herself -- would be turned over to the police. Guess that amnesty thing didn't work out.

copline.jpg

Here are some of the cops keeping order outside Kimmel. Washington Square News says every student who stayed inside past 1:45 a.m. is suspended -- as were the five student negotiators who apparently walked into a trap earlier.

Farah Khimji is shown above being interviewed, with councilmember Charles Barron standing behind her. She says she was pushed to the ground by a bunch of security guards, which Barron calls an "outrage."

Rick Santelli Rant on CNBC

Rick Santelli Rant, on-air editor for CNBC, broadcasting from CME Group in Chicago, got the floor traders going with his impassioned speech about the mortgage bailout, and now he’s got the rest of America riled up as well.

Inviting capitalists to join him at Lake Michigan in July for a tea party, Santelli says he’ll be dumping in some derivative securities.

Santelli’s comments are, of course, being hotly debated by the left and the right, with much hullabaloo.

Check out Rick Santelli’s rant, which has unofficially been dubbed the “rant of the year,” in the video below.

If you haven't seen this yet, you need to. Rick Santelli from CNBC goes on a great rant about the stupidity of Obama's mortage plan not to mention the whole stimulus plan, to the applause of traders in Chicago. A great moment of apparently unscripted TV that taps into the anger that many folks feel about the current policy regime.

real clear economics The Upside-Down Economics of Consumption

real clear economics By Michael Kinsley

In January, Suze Orman, the blonde financial adviser who's all over TV telling you to cut up your credit cards, went on "Oprah" to discuss how to cope with the recession. Orman recommended not eating in restaurants for a month. The appalled National Restaurant Association pointed out that if every "Oprah" watcher took this advice, it would cost 53,000 jobs.

But what are we supposed to do? Hoard our pennies, or spend them? For decades we've been told -- correctly -- that we're a profligate people with a profligate government, all living beyond our means. Some day, they said (okay, okay, I, among many others, said) that we would pay for all this profligacy. Now the black day has arrived, and we're told that the best way out of this mess is for the government to shovel money out the door even faster than before, with preference given to projects that can spend it as quickly as possible.

There has been less emphasis on what we, as individuals, should do. President Obama ducked the question at his news conference last week. But logic suggests that we should be gluing those credit cards back together. The government is actually going to pay us to buy a new house or car. Borrow and spend, borrow and spend is what got us into this mess. Apparently, borrow and spend will get us out of it.

It sounds too good to be true, but it is true. By now we all know about the "paradox of thrift": If everyone stops spending because times are bad, times get even worse. An economist writing in the New York Times the other day addressed the wonderfully inverted problem of people who feel guilty about not spending enough. His advice: Don't feel guilty about saving money, because it's the government's job, not yours, to make sure that we spend enough. But what if you don't feel guilty about reckless borrowing and spending? What if you actually enjoy it? This has been a more common attitude in recent years. Is it still okay? Or does the medicine have to taste bad to be any good?

And can we rely on the government to spend enough? This also seems like a wonderfully upside-down problem. The answer is, apparently not. We're going to need a second stimulus package, probably a third chapter of the bank bailout, more for the auto industry and others. It's all going to cost at least two or three trillion. If it works, it will be money well spent. If it doesn't work, that means we should have spent more.

Trouble is, money well spent is still money spent. The reasons that made it a bad idea to run up all that debt haven't disappeared just because something even worse came along. Almost no one in Washington is talking about this. Since 1981, Republicans have run up massive deficits and Democrats have discovered fiscal responsibility. Now they're all having too much fun reverting to type. Republicans reject the Keynesian premise that the money is being well spent because it is being spent. Too zen for them, or something. For some Democrats, meanwhile, the very fact that a program is costly has magically become an argument in its favor.

But even if the stimulus is a magnificent success, the money still has to be paid back. The plan of record apparently is that we keep borrowing, spending and stimulating, faster and faster, until suddenly, on some signal from heaven or Timothy Geithner, we all stop spending and start saving in recordbreaking amounts. Oh sure, that will work.

There is another way. If it's not the actual, secret plan, it will be an overwhelming temptation: Don't pay the money back. So far, even as one piggy bank after another astounds us with its emptiness, there have been only the faintest whispers about the possibility of an actual default by the U.S. government. Somewhat louder whispers can be heard, though, about the gradual default known as inflation. Just three or four years of currency erosion at, say, 10 percent a year would slice the real value of our debt -- public and private, U.S. bonds and jumbo mortgages -- in half.

Anyone who regards the prospect of double-digit inflation with insouciance is either too young to have lived through it the last time (the late 1970s) or too old to remember. Among other problems, inflation works only as a surprise or betrayal. It can never be part of any public, official plan. Plan for 10 percent inflation, and you'll get 20. Plan for 20 and you'll need a wheelbarrow to pay for your morning Starbucks. But if that's not the plan, what is?

I Call Shotgun!

I Call Shotgun In this case, riding shotgun means having to get the coveted seat before 21 other pups do. That’s right, a woman in Pottsboro, TX was sharing her station wagon with 22 dogs. I have to believe that didn’t smell too pretty.

Twenty-two dogs found confined to a station wagon were seized by the SPCA of Texas on Monday morning and taken to an animal shelter in McKinney, SPCA officials said.

Investigators from the SPCA got a tip about a car parked along an unmarked road near the police station in Pottsboro, about 80 miles north of Dallas.

When a Grayson County constable tried to serve a warrant around 9 a.m., a woman in the car locked the doors and refused to come out, said Maura Davies, a spokeswoman for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Inside, 20 adult dogs and two newborn puppies - appearing to be papillons and long-haired Chihuahuas - were crowded in among blankets, a pot of water and waste. Investigators don’t know how long the dogs had been in the car.

The dogs were removed from the car and taken to the Perry Animal Care Center. The SPCA is waiting for a judge to issue a decision as to who will get custody, the owner or SPCA. I’m going to have to vote for the SPCA in this case.

No charges have been filed against the woman, or expected to be. She wasn’t coherent when approached in the car, the SPCA contacted Adult Protective Services.

We hope the woman and dogs get the care they need.

More MIAA Tournament berths up for grabs this week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With just two weeks left in the regular season and only three teams having locked up berths in the MIAA Championship Tournament, there's plenty of battles left to be settled.

Slots are within arms reach for three squads. Nebraska-Omaha (15-8, 9-7 MIAA) and Washburn (13-11, 9-8 MIAA) need only to win or have Northwest Missouri State (11-12, 6-10 MIAA) lose once to secure their places in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City for the opening round March 5.

Both the Mavericks and Ichabods each have head-to-head sweeps over Northwest, so in case of a tie each would have the edge on Northwest.

Emporia State (15-9, 9-8 MIAA) split the season series with Northwest, so the Hornets need a win and a Bearcats loss to start making reservations for KC.

Wednesday (Feb. 18), the UNO Mavs host seventh-ranked Central Missouri (20-3, 13-3 MIAA) -- the MIAA co-leaders. ESU hosts Pittsburg State (10-13, 5-11 MIAA) the same night while Northwest entertains Truman (6-18, 1-16 MIAA) .

The WU Ichabods return to action Thursday (Feb. 18) when they host Missouri Southern (17-9, 7-9 MIAA).

The Mules are the MIAA's hottest team, winning their last eight games. UCM will be aiming to taking a nine-game winning streak into its nationally-televised game Saturday (Feb. 21) against Northwest. It will be the 200th renewal of the series between the Mules and Bearcats.

Central Missouri defeated UNO in their first meeting, 85-72, but will be trying to even the season series when the CBS College Sports cameras come to the Multipurpose Building.

Emporia State claimed a 102-100, four-overtime win over the Gorillas Jan. 10. The Hornets are idle Saturday.

Washburn dropped its first meeting to the Southern Lions, 82-67, in Joplin Jan. 10. Since that win, MSSU has just two victories in its last nine games.

After hosting the Lions, WU goes to Pitt State Saturday. The Ichabods defeated the Gorillas in Topeka, 85-73, Jan. 14.

League co-leader and fourth-ranked Southwest Baptist (20-3, 13-3 MIAA) hits the road to take on third-place Fort Hays State (17-6, 10-6 MIAA) Wednesday before returning to Meyer Sports Center to host UNO.

The Bearcats defeated the Tigers in their first meeting, 84-64, FHSU's last loss before embarking on the eight-game win streak snapped by UCM last Saturday (Feb. 14).

SBU will be out to avenge one of its three losses when the Mavericks come to Bolivar. UNO handed the Bearcats an 88-84 setback on Jan. 14 in Omaha.

Missouri Western (11-13, 8-9 MIAA), with a magic number of three entering the week, is idle until hosting Truman Saturday at the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Griffons lost their first meeting with the Bulldogs, 69-67.

REGIONAL RANKING OUT WEDNESDAY: The next NCAA Division II South Central Region ranking will be released Wednesday (Feb. 18).

In the list released Feb. 11, the top seven stayed the same, including Central Missouri at No. 1, Southwest Baptist at No. 3 and Fort Hays State at No. 7. Nebraska-Omaha moved up one spot to No. 8.

UCM and SBU both went 2-0 last week. FHSU lost to the Mules and defeated Truman, while UNO lost to Western and downed Truman.

The South Central Region consists of the MIAA, Lone Star and Heartland conferences. Each conference has an automatic berth to the regional tournament -- the other five teams to advance to the eight-team bracket will be determined by their regional ranking.

UCM STOPS TIGERS' STREAK AT EIGHT: The Central Missouri Mules won the battle of the two hottest teams in the MIAA on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) against Fort Hays State by a 69-57 score at the UCM Multipurpose Building.

The Tigers had won eight consecutive contests coming in to the game while Central Missouri had taken seven straight.

Central Missouri scored the game's first five points and led the entire day.

The second stanza saw Fort Hays State cut the lead down to three in the early minutes on two occasions, the last with 17:29 on the clock. It took less than two minutes for the Mules to take back control though, and UCM would push that margin to 16 with 9:43 left.

The Tigers made one last run at it with six unanswered points to make it a six-point game with 3:06 to play, but a layup by Watts off the Fort Hays press on the next possession sealed the deal.

Junior F Sanijay Watts and senior G De'Andre Byrd had 18 points apiece for UCM. Senior G Terry Jeffries scored 16 points for Fort Hays State.

Truman: Sophomore F Ethan Freeman made his first eight shots on the way to 19 points in the loss to UNO... The Bulldogs are seeking their first road win in 12 tries this season... Senior G Banks Estridge is the only Bulldog to have started all 24 games this season.

Washburn: The Ichabods will be trying to snap a five-game losing skid to the Lions... WU just missed forcing overtime vs. SBU when senior F Lekheythan Malone's follow dunk after a three-point miss by senior G DeAndre Eggins didn't beat the buzzer... Eggins had just six points vs. UCM, snapping his string of double-figure games snapped at 16.

Madea goes to jail

Madea goes to jail Times are tough for Tyler Perry these days. With critical accolades in short supply and box office returns slowing to a worrisome degree, it's time to bust out the old drag routine again to stimulate the faithful.
Madea Goes to Jail

Discounting a microscopic cameo in last year’s “Meet the Browns,” “Madea Goes to Jail” is the first time the titular Georgian hell-raiser has assumed a starring role in three years. I’ll be honest: she wasn’t missed. An unpardonably primitive, repetitive dramedy that promises a farce yet delivers the same tiresome Perry brand of spiritual and empowerment hooey, the “Jail” of the title is more apt as a metaphor for the ticket buyer’s situation than a comic location for Madea to prance around within.

When a destructive freeway chase lands smart-mouthed Madea (Tyler Perry) in court, further outbursts of verbal abuse and anger management issues send her to prison, where she finds friendship with the ladies of the cellblock (including Vanessa Ferlito and Sofia Vergara). One of these wayward souls is Candace (Keisha Knight Pulliam, the once and future Rudy Huxtable), a junkie prostitute with ties to Joshua (Derek Luke), a prominent Assistant D.A. who long ago derailed the young woman’s life and now desires to help rebuild it. The newfound attention upsets Joshua’s fiancée (Ion Overman), who uses her deceitful legal power to separate the two and return Joshua to his rightful place as a spineless husband-to-be.

While the marquee reads “Madea Goes to Jail,” the true title should be, “Madea Goes to Jail Sometime in the Third Act, So Here’s This Nonsense about a Hooker and Her Gang Rape Enabler.” In classic Perry form, “Jail” is a schizophrenic production that wishes to indulge its spastically comedic roots while dishing up some reheated melodrama that the diminishing fanbase has come to treasure. The division in tone is a stunner, with Perry trying to employ his violent Madea tomfoolery as a rodeo clown while letting topics of drug addiction, sexual abuse, and vocational deception take center stage. It’s a bit of a cheat to promise viewers one direction while clearly favoring another, but it wouldn’t be Perry if the film wasn’t outrageously irrational, flimsily edited, acted with rafter-quaking severity, and scripted with Magic Markers. I’d probably feel cheated at this point if Perry actually made a concentrated effort to maintain a steady dramatic tone.

How strange is this picture? At one point Perry asks Luke to give his all to camera, pouring his heart out as the character struggles with a painful realization of guilt. Oh, how the tears flow! And then the filmmaker cuts to a scene where Madea beats up a team of bailiffs as she’s dragged to the big house. So much for letting the nuance sink in.

“Jail” doesn’t deviate from the template set by the early Perry pictures: serving up questionable Jesus-scented messages on accepting personal responsibility for wrongful actions (a concept given 90 seconds of air before it’s oddly paved over for the traditional white knight conclusion), confusing character motivations to a point of unintentional laughter, and permitting the cast to mug for the camera until their cheekbones bleed.

Obviously Perry takes the gold medal in the overacting department, again using Madea as a vessel for his sassmouth energy and improv-heavy one-liners. With Madea beating up cops, ruining the day for nasty Caucasians everywhere, and refusing to accept psychological deconstruction (a subplot the welcomes a Dr. Phil cameo), the character is as wily as ever in “Jail,” making the divide between plots impossible to suitably bridge. It’s a shame Perry refuses to take the character anywhere new, as a little change of pace might actually push Madea into the alien arena of earned laughs, and not the semi-minstrel thin-ice pond she skates upon now.

“Madea Goes to Jail” is a softball motion picture even for Perry, who only uses the film to broaden his empire (characters/newfound sitcom stars Cora and Leroy Brown cameo), not to challenge his abilities as an actor or storyteller.

Cubs tickets

Cubs tickets go on sale today Friday the 20th of February, 2009. This is the time of year that Cubs fans have been waiting for. These are single game tickets. This got me thinking. You know, if we are all on the brink of the next great depression then why are people spending money on cubs tickets? First of all the cubs suck and they always have sucked. Second of all, baseball sucks worse now than it ever did in the history of the game. These ball players are all spoiled rotten asshole brats! They even go on strike from time to time because ten or twenty or thirty million just isn’t enough money to satisfy their giant egos. I remember back in the very early 90 when jose conseco started charging his fans moneyh for autographs! I turned my back on the game then, and I’ve never come back around to it. And I wont. But for all you chumps that delight yourself with watching grown men play a kids game and pat each other on the ass, go for it.

chicago cubs Cubs Spring Training Thoughts So Far

chicago cubs So Cubs Spring Training is underway as all players besides Kosuke Fukudome have arrived in Mesa and are taking part in full day workouts. One thing from Lou Piniella is that he might move Alfonso Soriano down in the lineup. I would agree with this but only if Piniella and Soriano stick to it and he isn’t moving back to the lead off spot three weeks into the season. Soriano is open to it as of right now so I’d expect him to play a few games while hitting down in the order.

Piniella also said that Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg would both get the chance to close games while in Spring Training. Both pitchers will also throw earlier in the game at times as well so they will both be getting quite a bit of action as the team decides who to use in the closers role. Gregg will get quite a bit of work while Marmol is pitching in the World Baseball Classic as well.

Things will start picking up down in Arizona and here at ChicagoCubsBlog.net once the team starts playing in some games and we have roster moves to blog about. For now, we are six days away from the first game and we don’t expect any big moves or drama before then.

pawn shop symbol Buying Your New Bathroom

pawn shop symbol Buying your new bathroom is probably one of the largest and most demanding expenses you will face. The bathroom market is very diverse and you will need to make decisions about where to buy, how much to spend, and what bathroom style to choose. I will clarify some of your choices.

Your first decision is to decide upon a bathroom budget and how to raise the money. A new bathroom will increase the value of your home, so it is akin to an investment.

Your home has a maximum potential value according to its location. To prove that to yourself, just look at a flat in London, and then look at the same style and size flat in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The London flat will cost much more. So spend according to the potential marketability of your home. Estate Agents often say a 5-10% expenditure on interior upgrades is a reasonable cost. So a 100K flat could warrant a 5-10K expenditure on upgrades. Much of that could be for your new bathroom.

After fixing your budget, you need a bathroom design done. There are key decisions to about product types to make. You may want a steam unit, a whirlpool, a sauna, rainbars, bodyjets, a walk-in enclosure, a shallow tray, or many other bathroom fittings.

A bathroom showroom is a good place to start and ask the sales manager to do a design. He may need to visit your home. Designs are done using CAD (computer aided design) software or graph paper. After his design, you will have a good idea of what can be done. The sales manager will offer normally an installation service and provide a total price for supply and installation.

Giving your purchase to the showroom is the safest and easiest route. He has premises and is easily accessible and you will have just one contact. However, using the services and products from a showroom is probably the most expensive route to take. It is safe, but that safety has a cost.

Showrooms are given special pricing on certain lines, and they will recommend those lines. Also, the showroom has a limited supply line; maybe only 10% of supply lines. So you choice is limited. Labour via a showroom is marked up, so the installation will be expensive.

If you decide against using a showrooms services, you can try shopping at a plumbers merchants.

Plumbers Merchants have limited customer service and they rarely do bathroom designs. They are in business to serve plumbers, but they also do retail. Plumbers merchants are cheap, and the large nationally based ones can get almost any product.

You will need to have all your facts available to yourself. Buying that route will save you money. They will not install for you, so you will need to find your own plumber.

Plumbers advertise in their local papers and that shows they are looking for work. That will normally mean a far better price for you. Advertisements in the Yellow Pages for plumbers, especially with 0800 numbers, rarely advertise low cost services. Use a local paper if possible. Always use the services of a Corgi registered plumber whenever possible.

The Internet is another source and one that is growing very rapidly for bathroom supply. Bathstore.com embraced the web and it sells via the Web and its stores. There are countless showrooms also on the Web.

Buying via the Web will widen your choice dramatically and also open up deals to you for great prices. You will need to know the products well, and be careful about deliveries. Under the law, when you sign for something as received and in good condition, you have no legal recourse if the goods are damaged.

Phone the web retailer to put a human voice to the website. That will increase your confidence in the companys services.

Happy Shopping.

wired 96.5 Janita Jones Styles sues Wired 96.5, charging race bias

wired 96.5 Styles hosted the midday shift at Wired 96.5 from December 2003 through September 2006 without a contract. Her legal complaint alleges that she, the only African-American full-time on-air personality, was also the lowest-paid, and that she was terminated for using the station's logo on her MySpace page and on a party flier for a promotional appearance even though some white colleagues had done the same without repercussion from the FM station.

Styles says that the station decided against having "urban" personalities appear at high-profile events and that it was trying to cater toward more "non-urban" advertisers. "Urban," by the way, is a radio term for black people.

The complaint details that in June 2006, she met with station manager Lynn Bruder to negotiate a one-year-contract, but they were unable to agree to a deal. Styles' suit alleged that she was offered a paltry raise and told that she would have to prove herself, though she had been at the station for more than two years. The filing states that when Styles showed her attorney's revisions to the proposed contract to Bruder, the station manager said, "This is what I do to lawyers," and stuck it in a paper shredder.

Our efforts to reach Bruder yesterday were unsuccessful.

In a legal filing last month from Beasley Broadcasting in response to Styles' complaint, the company denies any allegation of race discrimination, stating that Styles had been terminated for plugging club appearances on her show, as well as a Web site that sold cell-phone ring tones, without the station's permission. Beasley Broadcasting says that Bruder shredded the station's contract offer, not revisions by Styles' attorney. The station also refutes that Styles was the lowest-paid host. Before filing suit, Styles made similar racial allegations in a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Beasley denied that charge.

sir ej what I want to know is whether, when she said that, a whole lot of painted, skinny guys in thongs rushed out and gyrated all around her 80s-style:

And then Elton John said: "I never cease to be amazed at the misogynist attitude of some of the people in this country. I say to hell with them."

Geezer John is a whole lot less fun than the youngish John in the "I'm Still Standing" video, which is exactly the sort of thing feminists of the time would deplore. And now he's grown up into one of those people who deplore things.
