brad van pelt Remembering Brad Van Pelt

brad van pelt Just spoke with Harry Carson and George Martin about their memories of Brad Van Pelt, the Giants linebacker and five-time Pro Bowler who passed away on Tuesday at age 57. Very little of our conversations centered around football.

"Football is irrelevant," Martin told me. "We think in terms of friendship and the impact we had on each others’ life."

You can read more of the story here.

You can also browse through some Brad Van Pelt photographs -- like the one here -- on the Giants' website.

Carson said he spoke with Bill Parcells this morning.

"He said that when you start losing your constituants, it gets a little hairy," Carson said. "I agree."

Also, on a sad note, Martin said that this is the third loss he's suffered recently. A high school friend of his recently died from cancer and his younger sister died just last week at age 48.

New York Post Cecting Chimp Attack With Obama? artoon: Conn

new york post cartoon chimp Controversy is brewing over a New York Post cartoon that some believe ties this week’s chimp attack to President Barack Obama in a racially offensive fashion.
New York Post Cartoon Controversy

The cartoon, created by Sean Delonas and printed in Wednesday’s New York Post, shows police shooting a chimp dead, then saying: “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

New York Post Cartoon - Sean Delonas
Chimp Attack Connection

The image is presumably related to an incident in Stamford, Connecticut on Monday in which a chimpanzee escaped a woman’s home and attacked her friend. Officers ended up shooting and killing the animal.

The caption in Delonas’ New York Post cartoon is being interpreted by some as a reference to Obama, since — while he didn’t actually author it — he was the driving force behind the recently passed stimulus bill. The Rev. Al Sharpton tells the Associated Press the image is “troubling at best, given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys.” Sharpton also called upon the Post to clarify its intentions with the drawing.
NY Post Chimp Cartoon Response

The New York Post countered Sharpton’s statement and declared it was standing behind the cartoon. The publication’s editor-in-chief issued the following response:

“The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”

Cartoonist Sean Delonas went on to call Sharpton’s accusations “absolutely friggin’ ridiculous” during a phone interview with CNN Wednesday afternoon.

“Do you really think I’m saying Obama should be shot? I didn’t see that in the cartoon,” he said. “It’s about the economic stimulus bill. If you’re going to make that about anybody, it would be [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi, which it’s not.”

brad miller Trade! Chicago Grabs Miller, Salmons for Gooden, Nocioni

brad miller (Warning: I'm a Kings fan, and I'm a little unstable right now.) The belle of this season's trade deadline ball has been, in the absence of Amare Stoudemire, Mr. John Salmons. Salmons is a fine little player, a 29-year-old jack-of-some-trades who can score and pass and defend.

Brad Miller ... well, you know about him. A highly skilled center who can't jump over a pancake (not that he'd want to) and carries a $12 million salary next season. Everyone wanted in on Salmons, while Miller's destinations seemed few. Idea! Why not package them together to make sure you lose the dud? Sacramento did just that today in swapping the pair for Chicago's Drew Gooden and Andres Nocioni.

The Nocioni acquisition is odd at best for Sacramento; Andres is 29 years old, getting worse every year, and signed above the midlevel until 2012. He might fit better in Sacramento than Salmons did, but Salmons is cheaper and less likely to eat children. We like our children in Sacramento, and we like our children to have heads.

Gooden's deal expires this summer, as do the contracts for auxilliary players Cedric Simmons, Michael Ruffin (who heads to Portland) and Ike Diogu. As such, the Kings save $10 million next season and might be able to make a small free agent play. However, Sacramento now has three small forwards signed through 2012: Nocioni, Francisco Garcia and rookie Donté Greene. Two-guard Kevin Martin is also signed long-term.

The Bulls should certainly make the playoffs now. Salmons could very well start in front of Ben Gordon (and make him expendable this summer). I imagine Vinny Del Negro will start Miller; it's plausible that Tyrus Thomas or Joakim Noah could be involved in some trade talks, as well. (Who knows?)

super puma helicopter 18 survive UK Helicopter crash: Super Pumas can float

super puma helicopter 18 people aboard a helicopter that crashed off Scotland have survived due to a safety device that allowed the helicopter to float.

The Super Puma helicopter ditched about 120 miles (193kms) east of Aberdeen while approaching an offshore oil platform.

The helicopter managed to land in the water upright and stayed afloat due to a safety feature that deploys inflatable bags when a Super Puma lands on water.

Safety experts are referring to the crash as being similar to the Miracle on the Hudson crash last month, where a US Airways A320 crash landed on the Hudson River.

The Super Puma Helicopter, also known as the Eurocopter Super Puma is manufactured by French aerospace company Aérospatiale. First manufactured in 1978, the Super Puma has a remarkably strong safety record, with only three known incidents until todays crash. Of the past three incidents, only one included a loss of life, and the other two both involved ditching on water. The Super Puma is used as both a military and civilian helicopter. The helicopter that crashed today is owned by Bond Offshore Helicopters, a company specializing in transport to oil rigs in the North Sea.

Delhi6 first screening details NYC

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra missed his Saturday-night flight to New York for a very special screening of Delhi-6, when the flight left it carried producer Ronnie Screwvala, Sonam Kapoor and Rakeysh's wife Bharti, but not Rakeysh and Abhishek.

Instead, Rakeysh Mehra together with his leading man Abhishek Bachchan headed for New York on Sunday morning for the Sunday-night screening of Delhi-6 at the super-prestigious Museum Of Modern Art.

Rakeysh spoke in transit from Dubai, "We wanted to finish with this NY screening before having our first screening for cast crew and family. I'm absolutely proud that it's being screened at MOMA. Very proud that they chose Delhi-6. MOMA is not a theatre one can hire for a screening. Their curator saw our film. He sent an email saying it'd be a pleasure to screen our film at MOMA."

No other film from any part of the world ever has been premiered at MOMA.

Rakeysh refused to take the credit. "It's not about just Delhi-6. India is doing well all over the world. So our cinema is bound to benefit from that. Happily for us, Delhi-6 is as Indian as it can get. I haven't designed the film for Western audiences. We need to cultivate a taste for our recipe among western audiences and not cater to their tastes."

But before that on Saturday evening, Rakeysh watched the entire release print on his own. Not even the film's lead pair or the director's wife Bharti, who edits his films, were allowed to join Rakeysh.

"Just me in the theatre with my film. For the sake of watching my film all alone before it's given over to the world, I cancelled my flight to New York on Saturday. I was supposed to leave for NY on Saturday night, I left on Sunday night, just so that I could watch my film with me all alone. I didn't want anyone else with me. After this I don't think I'll watch the film again."

Rakeysh liked what he saw. "I deserved this opportunity to have the entire theatre to myself and watch my baby before it's given over to the world. I've never given this leave-taking to any film of mine earlier. Yeah, I feel the baby can stand up on its own feet now. Not that one can ever be satisfied with what one makes. Rahman once told me getting 90 percent of what you want to create is very hard. But getting from 90 to 91 percent is just as hard. That last lap is impossible to achieve. There's no finishing line. I wish I had one more month with Delhi-6. But it has to go out now."

Rakeysh and his team return to Mumbai on Tuesday for a screening for the cast and crew. "And then we've a formal premiere of Delhi-6 on Thursday, not in Mumbai but Delhi. Why Delhi? It is a film about Delhi, isn't it? My film belongs to Delhi and all the small cities of India."

Concludes Rakeysh, "We've done as much we could for the film. The rest is not up to us."

Hyundai Unveils 460 BHP Prototype Supercharged Tau V8

V8 Tau 460 bhp Prototype

The pace of development has been pretty rapid at Hyundai for the past couple of years and here comes another one. The company has unveiled a 460 bhp supercharged prototype of the V8 Tau engine.

The engine according to Hyundai assimilates all the technical know how that Hyundai has gathered over the years. The engine is a derivative of the award winning Tau V8 engine with a supercharger and some other performance enhancing technologies. The engine produces 460 bhp, the highest even by a Hyundai engine ever.

Jump over for the complete article.

Source: jalopink

The prototype V8 Tau engine features a screw-type roots supercharger, a novel clutched pulley mechanism, water-to-air intercooler and cylinder de-activation. According to Hyundai powertrain development engineers, the engine deliver 30% more power and torque while at the same time reduces the fuel consumption by upto 8% compared to the naturally aspirated 380 bhp Tau V8, thanks to the cylinder deactivation technology.

There are currently no plans to introduce this engine in any of their products but who knows, we might see a Genesis R-Spedc sedan rivalling the M3 very soon!

The Analyst as a Trading System

Make your own trading system, when every analyst saying now up now up than go SHORT and if they saying down down than go LONG in the market

When Sudarshan jee was saying many times that nifty will touch 2450 from that time NIfty was up and up.

After up move once again target 3050 fails and Now down down down

UnQuote

My Notes:
Quite possible. But, sometimes we get it right. When the bull market started, I had felt that we are in unchartered areas and the market can go much further than we imagine. It did. When the bear market started, I suggested that if the Nifty breaks below 5500, then we have a straight decline to 4500. At 4000, my suggestion was that 2000 was possible.

It is about momentum. Traders should follow the momentum. The tracking of momentum can be done in a hundred different ways. Just as the worship of God can be done through many religions but the road will eventually lead to Him. So also, traders will follow momentum in their own styles, but the end result is to be close to the Market.

If momentum is on the downside, I say sell. If the Market goes up, my trades will suffer losses. BUT, sometimes the market continues to go down and the trades will make money. The net result should be: gains should be more than losses.

Password Spectator Pro 3.20

Password Spectator Pro - allows users to decrypt and display passwords stored behind the asterisks

The Password Spectator Pro application allows users to decrypt and display passwords stored behind the asterisks.

Windows systems allow a convenient storage of frequently used passwords, such as the password of your dial-in ISP or FTP connection. However, since you no longer enter the saved password manually, you tend to forget them. What are you to do when you need to know one of the saved passwords? The password is staring right at you, but is hiding behind a row of "*****" asterisks.
Decrypting Decoding, Password Recovery

For 9x and NT users the solution was to use a password recovery utility that displayed the passwords inside the box. But as many users upgrade to Windows XP they realize that Microsoft changed the security of the password boxes and all old password recovery tools fail on Windows XP. But with the Password Spectator Pro, users can reveal their forgotten passwords on XP and Windows 2000 as easily as on Windows 98 or Windows ME.

Password Spectator Pro works both with the Internet sites and with software applications that require passwords.

Password Spectator Pro works with a great majority of applications; the only
exception are the programs that actually "store" asterisks behind the asterisks. Gladly, Password Spectator Pro is sold on a try-before-you- buy basis, which means there are no up front costs. You are given substantial time period to try and test the software to make sure this is the application you've been searching for.

PG entrance test likely to be scrapped
Medical students aspiring for post-graduate courses will no longer have to appear for an entrance examination. The Department of Medical Education and Research has mooted a proposal that students' MBBS marks be considered for admitting them to the master's programme and the decision is likely to be accepted by the state government.

Medical Council of India regulations say students can be admitted to post-graduate courses on the basis of an entrance exam conducted by the central government or the state government or on the basis of the MBBS aggregate if a particular state has one medical university. Maharashtra has 10 government colleges and three civic colleges in Mumbai that offer a host of post-graduate courses. Man tied to oil spills is a political player

Don Childers, the Eastern Kentucky businessman accused of twice contaminating Whitesburg’s drinking water supply, is a major political donor, according to campaign-finance records.

Childers and his family have given more than $50,000 in political donations in the last decade, including $13,000 to U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and $6,660 to the Kentucky Republican Party. The Childers family has given lesser sums to U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky.; U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky.; U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis, R-Ky.; state Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville; state Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr, R-Lexington; state Supreme Court Justice Will Scott; previous governors Paul Patton and Ernie Fletcher; and the Kentucky Democratic Party.

Childers is owner of Childers Oil Inc. in Whitesburg, which operates a chain of gas stations. According to the Kentucky Division of Water, oil leaks from two properties owned by Childers have been linked to incidents in which Whitesburg’s water supply — the North Fork of the Kentucky River — was contaminated and temporarily declared unsafe for consumption.

The first leak, in November, has led to a criminal investigation and a citation, state officials have said. The second leak is still being dealt with by Whitesburg residents this week as they’re unable to use their water for anything other than flushing toilets.

Home Buyer Tax Credit Information

Those reading here over the past week know we’ve been obsessing over the about-to-become-law tax credit for first time home buyers. Several iterations were bantered about Congress before the dust finally settled.

Yesterday both the House and Senate passed the stimulus package (officially now called the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009”) that included revisions to an existing first time home buyers tax credit. Courtesy of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), here is a nice breakdown comparing the two. The stimulus bill is expected to be signed into law by the President early next week.

You can download a PDF version of this home buyer tax credit comparison here.

There were a few other measures in the bill that could impact the housing market, most notably the reinstatement of higher FHA, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae loans for 2009 (which look like they will be $356,250 for FHA and $417,000 for Fannie and Freddie in Maricopa and Pinal counties). There is also a tax credit for homeowners for purchases of qualified new furnaces, windows and insulation. More on this as it becomes available.

Will this revised tax credit stimulate a housing market recovery? Maybe. Maybe not. Personally, I think the Senate’s version which was a $15,000 tax credit (that could be evenly split over two years), wasn’t subject to income restrictions and most importantly was for ALL, not just first-time, buyers would have been more successful. But that’s water under the bridge. It’s gone. What we have is what we have. This is a nice incentive for first-time buyers, and the fact that it is both refundable and does not have to be repaid is a significant improvement over the existing “credit” (which was really a zero interest loan).

I think it will help, but it’s certainly not a cure for the beleaguered real estate market.

Of Note: I am not a tax professional, nor do I play one on TV or the Internet. You should seek advice from a CPA or professional tax preparer. If the IRS comes after you with guns blazing for anything you read in this post or anything you think you read in this post, it’s not my fault. Seek professional help!

BEP Prints 489.6 Million Notes Worth $20.3 Billion in January

The U.S. government in January printed more notes with a higher total value compared to December, according to Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) figures released Friday, February 13.

The agency printed fewer $1s and $100s, and no $5s. However, the production of $50s more than doubled in January, making up for the difference.

In total, 489,600,000 banknotes were produced last month valued at $20,345,600,000. In contrast, the BEP printed 461 M notes worth $17.5 billion in November.

Spread across the 31 days in January, the BEP averaged some 15.8 million notes per day with a total daily face value worth about $656 million.

The agency also produced 3.2 million $100 star notes (total of these not in table below). Star notes are replacements for misprinted notes or certain serial numbers, like 000 000 000. These notes are generally more desirable to collectors as they are rarer.

Sleep Tight Baby "V" (just saying good-night, this is a GOOD report!)

Here I am! I'm so sorry to keep you all waiting. My friend Courtney sent me this song ("Holy", playing) today, it has touched me and has definitely given me goosebumps. Anyway, thanks Court! I luv u~

Our little V came out of surgery about 230pm. We've been talking to the surgeon, sitting with Veiyah, grabbed some dinner and I crashed hard for a couple of hours. So, here's what happened:

So yesterday I told you that they didn't have to undo the Glenn. Well, when we went to bed last night, she was satting in the 80's. We woke up at 4:30am to a call from a Dr in the PICU telling us that she was spiraling. ...Whatever that means. Nothing looked good. So they were going to do an ultrasound of her brain to see if that was what was causing her numbers to jump all over the place. Her brain ultrasound came back great. They said her numbers were a little better and they'd call us back if it got worse. 8am rolled around TOO quickly and the phone rings again.

Dr. Davis is deciding that we can't take any more chances and that the Glenn just wasn't going to work. Because of her pre-maturity, her lungs were never fully developed and the pressure was too high which restricted the blood from flowing from the upper part of the body into her lungs. With the shunt, is that it's not necessarily for the blood to flow by gravity (as what the glenn would do), that it is actually being pumped from her heart.

I grabbed everything and ran upstairs to sign consent. I put my hands on Veiyah and prayed. I said her name aloud as I do every time. Veiyah Jaielle. God's Power. God's Power is all over you Veiyah, he's inside of you, and He’s in your NAME!

I kissed her once again. Her chest was still open so I was a little sick to my stomach, but I didn't care, I kissed her for a long time. I think Jesus has given me the gift of smelling past all the tubes and tape this time around. Every time I smell her, she smells like Veiyah...my baby girl. That blesses me so much. So I always get a good sniff in before she goes.

I called my family and of course my parents were up within the hour but sat in the waiting room and let us sleep downstairs. They never give up. They will be here at the drop of a hat each and every time. We are indebted to my parents forever. I don't care how tired they ever are, they've been here each time. The first night that Veiyah was being handed to me to die in my arms, my parents were driving an hour (from their house) to show up to see our first miracle happen. They were quite delusional that night, but now my Dad says he tends to just push the Veiyah button when he gets the call now, and he's in the mode to do whatever it takes.

When I said earlier that I was done, I hope it didn't come across as that I was done with hoping, praying, fighting. I was done with exhaustion. Period. I'm sure you'll understand that.

Veiyah came back even pinker than yesterday and was satting in the 80's once again. They are okay with her in the 70's and 80's now. They just want to get her through this. Her labs continue to come back better and better. One of them, potassium, has been dipping though, so they are on top of that.

So, V (I call her that now because of all of you!...I never would have till you all started calling her that, thank u for that.) now has 2 shunts in. I really need Jeremy at these times to talk while I type. I'm sure you can tell when I call him and type his words for this blog. ;) If you can't, then go me! :)

We really are spent. Right now our knees are so dirty that they hurt. There are rocks stuck in the skin, they bleed, they are scarred. I'll proudly carry these scars, though. Funny thing, I still have scars on my knees from falling off my bike so many times as a kid. I remember having to prick the rocks out with tweezers...(ouch!) Well, as much as it hurt, I always got back on my bike. As much as this hurts, I'll always pick myself up in the morning and be ready to face another day and fight another battle for my daughter.

Hoping you all like the new name for the Blog. I thought it was pretty simple and not too crazy. Now I'm trying to figure out what to call you...we'll get there. Some are still asking for Veiyah's address. Remember that it's on the right hand side bar in pink, up top! :)

Let's pray for a blessed, restful night. You all make my families lives so much more livable. You amaze us beyond words. We could never thank you enough...but we do. Thank you.

Now that I call my Veiyah, V....I find it very appropriate by the way; but Jer got all defensive and said, "so your readers can call her V but I can't call her VJ? VJ being for her first and middle initials.

Not to offend anyone, but if you ever watch Oprah, VJ will not be used. PERIOD.

And no, I don't watch Oprah...I have to stay faithful to Judge Judy ya know! ;)

Here are some pics from today, and then I'm off for a bit to read "Goodnight Moon" to "V".

Poll Results (Feb. 9th-15th) Do you use cracked apps?

Last weeks poll asked the question “Do you use cracked apps?”. In the last few days cracked apps has made a pretty big impact on the Apple community. I am speaking of my previous post about Apple announcing that jailbreaking is illegal. As i mentioned in it, i don’t think Apples cares so much about people jailbreaing but about the people getting cracked apps. But really look at the numbers of last weeks poll. 226 people said they do not use cracked apps and 299 said they don’t know how. Which totals up to 525 people that do not know how to use them. Along with 1200 people that said they do use them. Now think about this. Of the people that own an iPhone only a fraction of the people jailbreak. And then only a percentage of them use cracked apps. Now lets think Apple. You now have announce that jailbreaking is illegal because of the usage of cracked apps. Uhm, people are breaking the law already by using cracked apps, do you think jailbreaking being illegal is going to stop them? no. Use your brain. Now lets get on with this weeks poll: How many pages of apps do you have?. Vote to the left.

Google Internet Bus in India is Spreading the Value of Internet Across the Border

Responsibility never needed a permit. It just needs good intentions. Google, has taken this initiative to spread the knowledge of internet across Indian rural areas. Though you may say that this is only going to benefit them. More and more people will be interested in internet subsequently surrendering under the big G. The company is up with a project to educate those internet-illiterate Indians, who do not have access to it. They are educating the people about the multi-facet benefits of Internet. Just a week ago Google started its internet education campaign in India on its Internet Bus.

The Google team is traveling to several towns and cities across India's Tamil Nadu region on the Internet bus. The bus is essentially a customized, Internet enabled vehicle used to roll out the online experience. The Google team is demonstrating the people, how Internet can be a used for the purpose of education, information, communication and entertainment. The contents of the demonstration are made available in both English and Tamil( local language). The people are being taught about the search, email, social networking, online maps and others.

The Google Internet bus started from Chennai where the campaign was initialized. Further it traveled to Vellore, Krishnagiri, Salem, Erode and Pollachi. On Saturday it arrived at Coimbatore. The Internet bus will visit Twelve cities before the efforts are withdrawn in mid-March. Meanwhile you can see the photos, videos and updates of the mission from the project's website.

Essentially, this a part of Google's overall strategy for organizing the world's information and making it universally accessible and useful.

Jupiter's Io -The Volcano Center of the Solar System

These images of Jupiter's intensely volcanic moon, Io, taken five months apart, show the results of a titanic eruption, 400-kilometers (250 miles) across over Pillan Patera. The ability to monitor such changes over a period of years was one of the Galileo Spacecraft's important scientific contributions.

Orbiting the giant planet Jupiter is the fascinating moon, Io, one of four moons discovered by Galileo in 1610. One look at Io and it is obvious that something unusual is going on there. Its mottled surface is a collage of colors-yellow, orange, red, and blackish browns - which make it look somewhat like a gigantic pizza. The explanation for this remarkable color palette is found down on the surface. Io is literally bursting with volcanic activity. Volcanoes spew out vast amounts of sulfurous material which cover Io's Iandscape, which reflects the various colors that sulfur takes on at different temperatures.

Intense radiation from Jupiter's atmosphere over the course of the Galileo mission severely damaged the craft's computer circuitry and resulted in failure of the computer systems. In order to prevent the possibility of the crippled spacecraft contaminating the environment of Io's neighboring moon, Europa, which may harbor a liquid water ocean beneath its surface, the spacecraft was plunged into the atmosphere of Jupiter on September 21, 2003.

Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. Volcanic plumes rise 300 kilometers (190 miles) above the surface, with material spewing out at nearly half the required escape velocity.

A bit larger than Earth's moon, Io is the third largest of Jupiter's moons, and the fifth one in distance from the planet.

in its widely varying distances from Jupiter, Io is subjected to tremendous tidal forces. These forces cause Io's surface to bulge up and down (or in and out) by as much as 100 meters (330 feet). On Earth, in the place where tides are highest, the difference between low and high tides is only 18 meters (60 feet), and this is for water, not solid ground.

This tidal pumping generates a tremendous amount of heat within Io, keeping much of its subsurface crust in liquid form, seeking any available escape route to the surface to relieve the pressure. Thus, the surface of Io is constantly renewing itself, filling in any impact craters with molten lava lakes and spreading smooth new floodplains of liquid rock. The composition of this material is not yet entirely clear, but theories suggest that it is largely molten sulfur and its compounds (which would account for the coloring differentals) or silicate rock (which would better account for the apparent temperatures, which may be too hot to be sulfur). Sulfur dioxide is the primary constituent of a thin atmosphere on Io. It has no water to speak of, unlike the other, colder Galilean moons. Data from the Galileo spacecraft indicates that an iron core may form Io's center, thus giving Io its own magnetic field.

Io's orbit, keeping it at more or less a cozy 422,000 kilometers (262,000 miles) from Jupiter, cuts across the planet's powerful magnetic lines of force, thus turning Io into a electric generator. Io can develop 400,000 volts across itself and create an electric current of 3 million amperes. This current takes the path of least resistance along Jupiter's magnetic field lines to the planet's surface, creating lightning in Jupiter's upper atmosphere.

indian cricket team new dress gets a new colour!

indian cricket team new dress Mumbai: When Men in Blue take on New Zealand in the first Twenty20 cricket match on February 25, they will be seen in a completely new outfit with a change in colour and design.

Team India is all set to sport a new look, as the team got a brand new kit in darker shade of blue which was unveiled prior to their departure to New Zealand.

The Men in Blue are gearing up for a change with a perfect makeover in their attire which has got a new look for the second time in two years. The existing outfit had been introduced at the time of ICC World Cup in 2007 which will remain as the team’s alternate dress.

Nike, which is the official kit sponsor of Indian cricket team, unveiled the new uniform in Mumbai for ODI and Twenty20 matches in presence of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and other cricketers like Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma and Rohit Sharma.

The new kit is said to have been developed after extensive research by designers and has been put through rigorous tests at the Nike Sports Research Laboratory. The colours of the graphics on the new jersey are inspired from the Indian tri-colour and represent speed and motion.

The launching ceremony was full of extravaganza and became more special when former players like Venkatesh Prasad, Vinod Kambli, Robin Singh and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan also made their presence felt wearing their respective blue jerseys of Team India.

The current bunch of players who were present to mark the occasion made heads turn with a catwalk in their brand new attire.
Now, we should hope that the new colour and technology of the uniform would add more colour and zing in the performances of Team India. The uniform definitely needed a facelift and it is good to see a new set of dresses for the Men in Blue, though the spirit of blue is very much there.

Team India would be eager to set records right in New Zealand, as they were handed a drubbing by the Kiwis on the last tour.

umesh reddy Serial killer Umesh Reddy sentenced to death by Karnataka HC

umesh reddy BANGALORE: Serial killer Umesh Reddy, who has been charged with ghastly rapes and murders of several women, was sentenced to death by the
Karnataka High Court on Wednesday. ( Watch )

Reddy, an ex-police constable, gained notoriety for his sex crimes, raping women even after murdering them.

Special judge S R Bannurmath, a senior High Court judge, while pronouncing the verdict, termed Reddy as a "violent offender" and described the case as the "rarest of the rare", deserving the death sentence.

"In this case, he is an ex-policeman who has become a habitual pervert, who not only commits robbery but also to satisfy his lust, attacks helpless women and commits rape," the judge said.

A lower court in 2006 had awarded him death sentence. But a year later, a two-member bench of the High Court expressed a divergent view - one favouring the death sentence and another life term on an appeal by him (Reddy).

This led to the constitution of a special judge, Justice S R Bannurmath, who pronounced the verdict on Wednesdfay.

Reddy faced 21 criminal cases, of which he was acquitted in 11. The remaining nine related to rape, murder and robbery.

noida mms Mid-Day's exploitative story

noida mms "Those who have read the front page story in Mid Day today were shocked. It showed a semi-nude girl, with the headline `Another sex clip rocks campus'. http://www.mid-day.com/delhi/index.htm. The article (http://www.mid-day.com/news/2009/feb/180209-Noida-MBA-student-leaks-girlfriends-striptease-video.htm) goes on to explain how this girl's boyfriend filmed her striptease and circulated it on the mobile through MMS. What is shocking is how Midday, instead of showing the culprit's face, has shown the victim in only her undergarments. Her face may be pixilated, but it's still disgusting to show a girl's picture, in such a vulnerable state by such a supposedly reputed paper. Midday has done to the girl, what her boyfriend did to her -- it's an outrage of her modesty and sexual exploitation. Recently, Midday did something similar. A week ago, it carried the headline which was completely sensationalised (in red ink too) that a minor child had been raped. They DARED to show the picture of the child and her distraught mother on the front page, instead of the culprit's face who was in police custody. As if those disrespectful mid-day mates were not enough, the paper is set to exploit rape victims as well. I don't know about you, but i am banning that crazy paper from my home and office.

Do write in to mid-day@mailbag.com and cc to editor shishir.joshi@mid-day.com to express what you think of such activities on this paper's part. I agree most tabloids are the same, but at least they don't show the victim's exploitation on the front page (they don't spare even a raped child)!! mid-day has crossed that line even; it is unbelievable. They're getting a long letter from me; let's see if they have the guts to print it. And in keeping with this group's Gandhigiri attitude of non-violent yet powerful protests, let's collectively ban this exploitative paper. What say?"

nhpc Landslide not a threat to power project: NHPC

nhpc Pithoragarh (UT), Feb 17 : The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation today sought to dispel anxiety over the safety of Dhauli-Ganga power project in the wake of continuous landslides in the area and said it was strong enough to withstand impact of the unseasonal phenomenon.

NHPC officials claimed that the 280 MW project at Chirkila in the district was safe as the landslide site was 2,200 metres away from the site. The unseasonal landslide, the reason of which was still not ascertained, has been continuous since February 6.

NHPC chief geologist A Dasgupta said the project site was 2,200 meters away from the landslide area and that the tunnel and power house were located beneath hard rocks.

Dasgupta refuted the charge that the land slide at Tawaghat was caused by collateral blasting done by NHPC and said the construction activities were taken up with special expertise from Bharat Explosives Limited.

The landslides have also stalled works on Ghatiyabaghar- Lipulekh Road connecting Tibet, Border Road Organisation (BRO) commanding officer Col Desai said.

On supply of essential commodities in affected areas after beak-up of road links district magistrate P S Gusain said stock of commodities was intact.

bsnl BSNL to Roll Out 3G by March

bsnl Will be the second telecom company to bring out 3G services in the country
E-Mail Print

Going by reports in various leading publications, it looks like state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will roll out 3G services by the end of this fiscal.

After MTNL, the other state-owned telecom operator in India that rolled out 3G services in Delhi by the name of Jadoo, BSNL will be the second telecom company to bring out 3G services in the country.
However, two reports by different publications contradict telecom minister A. Raja's statements regarding when exactly BSNL will launch 3G services.
According to The Economic Times, Raja said that BSNL will bring out services starting with Chennai on February 23rd. However, a Reuters report states that BSNL would launch the service only by end of March.
Earlier, we had reported that BSNL has been gearing up to launch its 3G services in Jammu and Kashmir by March this year.
ET also reports that the 3G auctions will be conducted by end of March this year, as stated by the minister.

homeowner affordability and stability plan Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan

homeowner affordability and stability plan Since taking office the Obama Administration has become forced to confront a historic economic collapse caused by years of neglect, abuse, and outright fraud in our financial markets, … part of the answer is a strategy is to help stem the foreclosure crisis after the housing bubble burst … “We must stem the spread of foreclosures and falling home values for all Americans, and do everything we can to help responsible homeowners stay in their homes,” President Obama stated yesterday in Denver …

Today I watched the President as he spoke about his $75 billion plan from Mesa, Arizona … here’s are snippets of what he had to say … “the crisis strikes at the heart of the middle class” … “this crisis is vast but begins one house, one family at a time” … “nearly 6 million homes in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure” … “home prices across the country have fallen over 25%” … “in the end all of us are paying the price for this crisis” … “stabilize, repair, and reform our banking system” … “it will not help speculators” … “this plan could help stop the slide by up to $6,000 per home” ….

1. refinance at a lower rate through FANNIE and FREDDY MAC … removes restriction on 80% rule on mortgages they currently have on the books
2. work with borrowers and lenders to reveal the true terms and conditions and refinance guidelines and reduce costs
3. work to assure new loan availability and bolster the mortgage market

fannie mae and freddie mac Twice as Effective & Twice as Sovereign: Fannie / Freddie Backstop Swells 100% to $400 billion

fannie mae and freddie mac "Resetting these agreements from $100 to $200 billion each should remove any possible concerns debt and mortgage-backed securities investors have about the strong commitment of the U.S. Government to support Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac," said James Lockhart, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees the companies [in remarks earlier today]. [1]

… expliciter and expliciter …

Earlier today it was reported that Obama’s big housing bailout quietly doubled government support to the already quasi-nationalized mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Not only that, but this report [2] asserts that "… the [new] plan extended the government’s line of credit with the GSE’s and enabled Treasury to take an equity stake in the firms."

Doomers should re-read this earlier Doom post detailing Bush protege Lockhart’s earlier adventures with the infamous "effect guarantee" on the GSE Agency Debt. The bottom line is that agencies today took a giant step towards achieving the status of officially acknowledged Sovereign Obligations of the United States of America. Put another way, it’s beginning to look like the OMB will soon have to double its number for America’s national debt.

[1]: "Government Doubles Available Aid to Fannie and Freddie", by Binyamin Appelbaum, Washington Post, February 18, 2009.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were seized by the government in September to stabilize their role as the main source of funding for the mortgage lending industry. The government pledged up to $200 billion to cover the companies’ losses, but officials said at the time they did not expect the companies to need that much help.

new york post cartoon Offensive New York Post 'Shoot The Monkey' Cartoon

new york post cartoon Political cartoonists inhabit sacred space in a free democracy. They must be free to express themselves without a filter or none of us will be. But that carte blanche does not trump my rights as a reader to voice my opinion on the perspective that's presented.

I felt the now infamous New Yorker cover was misguided, and I think Sean Delonas's cartoon in Wednesday's edition of the New York Post fails to do anything more than make light of a tragic incident, ignore the history of the NYPD's involvement in controversial shootings and perhaps label President Barack Obama a crazy monkey. ...

Sure, I see the racial implications of the cartoon. But mostly I am still haunted by the killing-murder of Amadou Diallo in 1999 and other shootings linked to the NYPD. I think Delonas's cartoon is offensive and ineffective all around.

Of course, according to TMZ, Al Sharpton fired off a statement:

"The cartoon in today's New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less-than-casual reference to this when, in the cartoon, they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that, "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."

st. james davis The Worst Story I Ever Heard

st. james davis The Davises are like any other family, only instead of a son, they raised a chimpanzee. As with Travis, the chimp that attacked a woman in Connecticut on Monday, for years everything seemed fine. Then something strange and horrifying happened — though not necessarily what you'd think.

St. James Davis is crying. It's a loud, whooping wail of a cry. He's sitting in the driveway of his childhood home, a sprawling, L-shaped ranch house in West Covina, California, on a sun-drenched day last September. Standing next to him is his wife of nearly forty years, LaDonna. On the brink of tears herself, LaDonna grabs a cloth and gently cradles his cheek with her right hand. With her left, she carefully dabs at his mouth. St. James keeps his head still as she tends to him. He doesn't say a word as he calms down. He doesn't have to — LaDonna knows what he wants now that the sun is beating down on him. She grabs the beige bucket hat hanging around his neck and eases it onto his head.

LaDonna tends to St. James because he can't tend to himself. St. James, sixty-six, a former high school football star and onetime Nascar driver, is severely disabled and disfigured. There's a two-inch hole in the heel of his swollen left foot, and he is confined to a wheelchair. He has no nose, only a red, raw, exposed septum, surrounded by narrow openings. At the top are three tiny magnets designed to hold in place a crude silicone prosthesis, which is constantly falling off. His right eye is gone, replaced with glass. The skin on his face droops like candle wax because so many bones around his cheeks and eyes were broken. His mouth, which has been completely reconstructed, is stuck in a frown. On his left hand, his index, middle, and ring fingers are stumps. His right hand is much worse. He has a misshapen hunk of flesh for a thumb, which appears as if it were lumped onto his wrist with clay. His index and middle fingers are gone; his ring finger and pinkie are immobile.

But St. James's crying has nothing to do with his physical condition. He's crying because of news he and LaDonna recently received about what really can only be called their boy. At first, St. James and LaDonna were reluctant to speak about all that's happened to them. LaDonna prefers not to talk to outsiders about their life because, she says, they are so often misunderstood.

obama housing plan Evaluating Obama's Housing Plan

obama housing plan

President Obama has unveiled his housing plan a day after signing his stimulus into law. The Housing Plan has been eagerly awaited, as the stimulus has been subject of much controversy and the banking bailout has been met with disapproval.

The housing plan is essentially two fold. Part of the plan is aimed at reducing mortgage payments for those paying them, and another part of the plan involves making loans to people from the now nationalized Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac.

Here is what the Obama Houseing Plan contains as explained by marketwatch.com:

"Allows 4 million –5 million homeowners to refinance via government-sponsored mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Establishes $75 billion fund to reduce homeowners' monthly payments.
Develops uniform rules for loan modifications across the mortgage industry.

Bolsters Fannie and Freddie by buying more of their shares.
Allows Fannie and Freddie to hold $900 billion in mortgage-backed securities — a $50 billion increase" (Marketwatch.com).

Many are suggesting that the plan may help at least 9 million home owners, which is a good thing.

This housing plan completes the Obama economic recovery strategy. Here is that strategy 1) spend money to create jobs (the stimulus), 2) pour money into banks to make credit flow again, and 3) help people afford the homes they are buying.

The question we must ask, if we are to properly evaluate this strategy, is does it actually change the problems that go us into this mess? Or do we have here nothing but an effort to resuscitate and fundamentally and fatally flawed system, which at best only delays the inevitable?

Brooke Astor & Vince Astor

brooke astor New Yorkers feasted on the story when the news broke in 2006: Brooke Astor, a worldly and megaphilanthropist with Alzheimer’s disease, had been swindled of millions of people and mistreated by his own son.

Anthony “Tony” Marshall, her only child, was charged with criminal offenses, including grand theft, possession of stolen property, forgery and conspiracy.

Jury selection for the trial, which also involves Marshall’s lawyer, Francis Morrissey Jr., who, including in response to accusations of forgery and scheming to defraud, is scheduled to begin Monday.

An attorney representing Marshall, Fred Hafetz, would say only that there was “no way” and he hoped that his client “is justified.”

The trial is likely to revive the tabloid frenzy, which has promoted titles such as “Bad heir day”, “Mrs. Astor disaster” and “DA kick at Astor.

This is not the way closest to those who want it to remember Astor. And information resulting from spills of the witness is not the type of Astor, who died in August 2007, at 105, would like to share in public.

“She was mortified,” said Vartan Gregorian, a longtime friend and president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. “She was very private.”

With her late husband Vincent Astor Foundation, Astor was credited to New York, where the Astors made their fortune, about $ 200 million. And even if she felt it was expected of him is clean and elegant, “said Gregorian, wealth does not define it.

Talk of money, property and others have unfortunately been out of bounds to his dinner, he said. “It is not ostentatious. … It was very funny, very spiritual and very caring.”

When a so-called robber accosted her, she foiled the attempted hold-this response: “Excuse me. My name is Mrs. Astor. I do not think we’ve been properly introduced, “Gregorian recalled with a laugh.

For 23 years, Linda Gillies led the Astor Foundation and saw his approach to doing good - not only for its “crown jewels”, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library, but also for lower profile programs.

Astor has often been quoted as saying: “Money is like manure, it’s not worth a thing if it is around.” But for her, yet it was not simply the money.

Betty Cooper Wallerstein, a community organizer who assisted Astor in 2500 to save low-income apartments in Manhattan, Upper East Side, Astor described as equally comfortable mingling with the tenants as it was in high society.

sean delonas Monkey cartoon by Sean Delonas, offensive

sean delonas Today's issue of the New York Post carries has a controversial "monkey" cartoon by Sean Delonas. At first glance, you'd probably think the editorial cartoon was inspired by the latest shooting of a violent chimpanzee named Travis in Connecticut.

If you look at the photo/picture below, the cartoon shows a chimp splayed on the ground in a pool of blood while two police officers stand over the dead body. It would have just been alright if not because of the words "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

The "monkey-shooting" cartoon implies that the two officers just killed President Obama. In my viewpoint, Sean Delonas' cartoon in Wednesday's edition of the New York Post label President Barack Obama as a crazy monkey who wrote the just-approved U.S. economic stimulus bill.

What do you think, is the cartoon a racist attack towards African-Americans, labeling them as monkeys?

2/16/09 - One Blessed Dad!!!

Ha! I was having too much fun with the camera.

First of all, I wanted to let everyone know that the NBC News Affiliate (WXII Channel 12) will be airing our story tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 5pm est. They will be putting the feed on the website for all of those who are not local to the Winston Salem/Greensboro area. We are one of those people, so they are going to mail me a DVD of the story and I will also post it to the blog when it comes in.

Kayleigh has been doing awesome over the past couple days. She has gone up on her feeds and her belly is not so bloated anymore. Yesterday, she was enjoying our company with tons and tons of kisses. It was perfect as every time we would give her some smooches, it was almost as if she was closing her mouth and puckering up for us. She is so sweet when she is not in any kind of pain or discomfort, so we are overly excited about her progress right now. The stress level is almost instantly lifted and we get to enjoy spending time with her like normal parents should. It is unfortunate that we haven't had many days like these and the ones we did, were short lived and practically forgotten.

Speaking of great days and spending time with our children, a lot of you asked how Brandon and Allyson are doing through all of this. From the outside in, I can imagine thinking "How do Adam and Aimee have enough time in a day for everything that is going on in their lives, especially time for Brandon and Allyson?" Well, we don't have all the time in the world! But, with the time we do have, our major focus is to be the best parents we possibly can to each of our children on a daily basis.

Our schedule goes a little something like this: We wake up around 7:00am and work until we have to take the kids to school at 9:00. We then come back and work some or go straight to the hospital until we have to pick the kids up from school at 3:45. We then work some more, do homework then dinner. After dinner, we give the kids full attention to do whatever they want. Whether it is board games, TV shows, a movie, computer games, or video games. No matter what it is, we have a blast and we make the best of our time together so they feel as they are 100% loved. When they go to bed around 10:00, Aimee and I work, blog or spend some time with each other until 3 in the morning every single night.

They are handling this whole situation like champs. Honestly, their lives have not changed one single bit. The hard part is they are not able to go see Kayleigh because of RSV season and that has been going on since September. They saw her once passing in the hall as they took Kayleigh to the Cath lab, but then again, that has been a while now too. Every time they hear she is doing rough, they are sad because they see us sad. Although, they are very excited to hear when Kayleigh is close to coming home. Hopefully the next time around their hopes aren't shattered. They think it is the coolest thing when we talk about having 24 hour nursing care in the home, but they are just kids and I am jealous I don't look at the world the same way they do.

Overall, they both are doing amazing. Allyson made the A-B Honor Roll and Brandon received Wolf of the Day over 5 times, which rewarded him with his handprint on the school hallway wall. They are both two amazing children and life is such a wonderful experience, just watching them grow in to their own personalities that continue to make us die with laughter every single day. I can't say enough good things about them, but I do know for sure that I am One Blessed Dad to have a family like this.

When Kayleigh decides to finally make the journey home to our house, we have an idea that I wanted to ask your opinion about. I am planning on creating a whole different blog that will allow you all to continue to follow Kayleigh's journey at home, but also follow our family as well. We will leave the hospital journey (old blog) and start the home journey (new blog) from then on. This will allow Kayleigh's story to remain just as it is on her blog for those who want to learn all about the NICU experience to educate themselves and help give them hope through their own journey's. The final post (When she comes home) will direct everyone with a link to the new site if they want to continue following in her story along with the rest of us. What are your thoughts about that? Would you care to hear about our crazy family? LOL

If you think it is a good idea, we need some help!!!! We can't think of a blog title! So, I am asking for EVERYONE to pitch in their ideas for our family blog title and we will award the person with the best idea with a huge.........uummmmm..........A huge...........and I mean a huuuuuuuuuugggggeeeeeee..........................A VERY HUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEE.........Thank you :)

One of the things I really liked in the comments was the number of people who were embarrassed to admit they liked the simple things: egg salad, deviled eggs, etc. Well have no fear, I'm going to keep posting things you'll be embarrassed to admit you like. I almost want to do peanut butter and jelly, just to see how many people say, "Oh man, I haven't had one of those in so long ..."

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm offering a free, 10 day mini-course in cooking from scratch.

Should Apple Offer 24-Hour Return Policy on iPhone Apps?

Have you paid for an iPhone app on the App Store only to find out it was completely useless or wasn't worth the price? Unfortunately, once you have purchased an iPhone app, you are stuck with it forever as there is no return policy.

Google which has a similar App Store for its Android platform called Android Marketplace seems to have a much customer-friendly policy.

Google will let Android phone users return apps within 24 hours of purchase for a full refund.

Google's Android Market Business and Program Policies states:
Returns: You have 24 hours from the time of purchase (not download) to return any applications purchased from Android Market for a full refund of any applicable fees. The option to return an application within this timeframe will be made available to you through the Android Market user interface.

It would have been good if Apple had a more customer-friendly policy for the App Store like Google especially since iPhone developers currently cannot offer demo versions of their iPhone app which would have allowed users to try the apps before buying them.

iPhone developers have started offering Lite version of their iPhone apps so users can try the free version before buying them but as Icon Factory's Craig Hockenberry points out in his article on pricing iPhone apps (a must-read for iPhone developers) the rules might not be applicable for all apps:

"There are two basic rules you need to follow when making a Lite version of your product:

1. The product must be fully functional. The application must stand on its own and be useful.
2. The user should not be inundated with “up-sell” reminders. Showing BUY NOW every 5 minutes is the quickest way I know to get rejected by the App Store.

The hard part, of course, is how to limit functionality. For many games, it’s pretty easy: you just limit the number of levels the user gets to play for free. A similar technique can be used for applications that track data by limiting the number of records that can be added.

But there are many applications that don’t fall into these neat categories. One such application is our own Frenzic. Due to the game’s open-ended nature, there’s not much we can do to set “levels.” Until there is some kind of demo mechanism on the App Store, we’re stuck with advertising, good reviews and word-of-mouth."

So what do you think? Should Apple offer 24-hour return policy on iPhone apps until there is some kind of demo mechanism?
